John Dee Helton, born June 12, 1943, in Booneville, Arkansas, to Oma Helton and Martha (Rushing) Helton, passed from this life surrounded by the love of his family and friends. John was a proud disabled veteran who served his country in the U.S. Army. He never met a stranger-he loved to visit with everyone he met and was known for his easy smile, quick wit, and generous spirit.
John cultivated a beautiful garden and took special pride in canning the fruits of his labor. He happily shared his harvest and his know-how, often helping family with their own gardens. A lover of Turkey Track and anything bluegrass, John was an extremely talented musician who played several instruments and was also a very good dancer. Music and fellowship were the heartbeats of his life.
John is survived by his children, Tammy Hanks of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and Sam Helton and wife Ana of Lavaca, Arkansas; his grandchildren, Valerie Hickman, Michael Cowan, Aria Helton, and Leon Helton; and his great-grandchildren, Taylor Alred, Teri Alred, and Brent Cowan. He is also survived by his sister, Brunetta Richmond Slaten.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oma and Martha; one son, John Patrick Helton; one grandson, Lee Marler; and twelve siblings.
John's visitation will be Saturday, November 15, 2025 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. at the Heritage Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Waldron, Arkansas.
John's celebration of life service will be Saturday, November 15, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at the Heritage Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Waldron, Arkansas with Danny Richmond officiating. Interment will follow at Helton Cemetery near Booneville, Arkansas.
Pallbearers will be: Sam Helton, Danny Richmond, Danny Richmond II, Justin Richmond, Markus Richmond, and Michael Cowan.
John will be remembered for his service to country, his deep love for family, his music, and the way he brightened every room he entered. His legacy of kindness, hard work, and good humor will live on in all who knew him.
